Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1884, John Tortes began his professional baseball career with the St. Louis Browns in 1904. A gifted outfielder with a strong arm and a keen eye at the plate, Tortes quickly established himself as one of the most promising young players in the American League.
In 1909, Tortes was traded to the Philadelphia Athletics, where he would spend the next seven seasons. During his time with the Athletics, Tortes helped the team win three American League pennants and two World Series championships.
However, Tortes's career was also marked by controversy. In 1915, he was accused of throwing a game against the Chicago White Sox. Although he was never formally charged, the scandal damaged his reputation and led to his eventual departure from the Athletics.
