Dlamini Zuma was born in Durban, South Africa, in 1949. She studied medicine at the University of Natal and worked as a doctor before entering politics. She joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1975 and was elected to the ANC's National Executive Committee in 1991. After the ANC came to power in 1994, Dlamini Zuma served as Minister of Health from 1994 to 1999.

As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dlamini Zuma played a leading role in South Africa's foreign policy, including its relations with the United States, China, and the European Union. She also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the establishment of the African Union.

Dlamini Zuma is a controversial figure. She has been criticized for her handling of the Marikana massacre in 2012, in which 34 striking miners were killed by police. She has also been criticized for her support of her former husband, Jacob Zuma, who has been accused of corruption and other wrongng.

Despite these controversies, Dlamini Zuma remains a popular figure in South Africa. She is seen as a strong and experienced leader, and she is likely to be a major contender in the race for the presidency in 2019.
