The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The virus was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China in December 2019. Since then, it has spread to over 200 countries and territories, and has caused a global pandemic.
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can range in severity from mild to severe. The most common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Other symptoms can include fatigue, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, and loss of taste or smell.
COVID-19 is spread through close contact with an infected person. The virus can be transmitted through respiratory droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also be transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.
There is no specific cure for COVID-19. Treatment is supportive and includes measures to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. Most people with COVID-19 recover within a few weeks. However, some people, especially those with underlying health conditions, may develop severe illness and require hospitalization.
There are a number of things that people can do to protect themselves from COVID-19, including:
- Getting vaccinated
- Wearing a mask in public
- Maintaining social distance (staying at least 6 feet away from others)
- Washing hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoiding touching their eyes, nose, or mouth
- Staying home if they are sick
