In the world of professional hockey, the story of Mike Danton stands as a cautionary tale of shattered dreams, corruption, and the devastating impact of violence.
Danton, once a promising young player with a bright future in the NHL, found himself entangled in a web of organized crime that led to a shocking murder plot and a tragic family tragedy.
The Rise and Fall of Mike Danton
Mike Danton had all the makings of a hockey superstar. Blessed with exceptional talent and a strong work ethic, he quickly climbed the ranks of minor league hockey. In 1999, he was drafted into the NHL by the New Jersey Devils.
But Danton's career took a sinister turn when he became involved with David Frost, a notorious organized crime figure. Frost introduced Danton to a world of drugs, gambling, and violence.
As Danton's off-ice life spiraled out of control, so did his hockey career. He struggled on the ice, and his personal problems became a distraction. In 2004, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues.
The Murder Plot
In January 2004, Danton and Frost hatched a chilling plan to murder Danton's agent, David Frost. Frost had become increasingly controlling of Danton's life, and Danton feared for his own safety.
Danton and Frost hired a hitman, John Dougherty, to carry out the murder. However, Dougherty went to the police and informed them of the plot.
Danton and Frost were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. The case sent shockwaves through the hockey world and the Canadian public.
The Broken Family
The murder plot not only shattered Danton's hockey career but also destroyed his family.
Danton's parents, John and Susan, were horrified by their son's involvement in such a heinous crime. They stood by him at first, but the strain on their marriage proved too great.
In 2005, John and Susan Danton divorced. Susan moved to the United States with their youngest daughter, while John remained in Canada with their older son.
The Aftermath
In 2009, Danton was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to seven years in prison. He served four years before being released on parole.
Frost was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He died in prison in 2017.
Danton has since rebuilt his life. He has become a successful businessman and has worked to raise awareness about the dangers of organized crime.
The story of Mike Danton, David Frost, and a broken Canadian family is a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and corruption. It is a story that will continue to be told for years to come.
