Natan Sharansky was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, in 1948. He was raised in a secular Jewish family. In his early 20s, he became involved in the Soviet Jewry movement, which fought for the right of Soviet Jews to emigrate to Israel. Sharansky was arrested in 1977 and sentenced to 13 years in prison for treason. He was accused of spying for the United States.
