My sister, Lieutenant Commander Supriya Jha, is a serving officer in the Indian Navy. She is one of the few women to have ever served in the Indian Navy's submarine arm.
Supriya's journey to the Indian Navy was not an easy one. She was born in a small village in Bihar, India, and grew up in a conservative family. As a young girl, she was told that girls should not dream of becoming soldiers or sailors. But Supriya was determined to prove them wrong.
After graduating from high school, Supriya applied to the Indian Naval Academy. She was one of only a handful of women to be accepted into the academy that year. At the academy, Supriya excelled in her studies and training. She was a top student in her class and was awarded the Sword of Honour for being the best all-round cadet.
After graduating from the academy, Supriya was commissioned into the Indian Navy as a sub-lieutenant. She served on a number of different ships and submarines before being selected for the submarine arm. In 2016, she became the first woman to command a submarine in the Indian Navy.
Supriya's story is an inspiration to all young women who dream of serving their country. She is a role model for women and girls everywhere. She shows that anything is possible if you have the courage and determination to follow your dreams.
