Mooncop: Tom Gauld's Cosmic Comic
Mooncop is a charming and thought-provoking graphic novel by Tom Gauld that explores the loneliness and beauty of space exploration. The story follows Officer Frank Schätzing, a lone police officer stationed on the Moon. Schätzing's job is to enforce the law and keep the peace on the desolate lunar landscape. But as he goes about his daily routine, he can't help but feel a sense of isolation and longing.
Gauld's artwork is simple and elegant, with a muted color palette that perfectly captures the cold and unforgiving nature of the Moon. The panels are often sparse, with plenty of white space, which emphasizes the vastness of the lunar landscape and Schätzing's loneliness.
The story is told through a series of short vignettes, each of which captures a different aspect of Schätzing's life on the Moon. We see him patrolling the lunar surface, investigating crimes, and interacting with the few other people who live on the base. We also see him reflecting on his life and his reasons for coming to the Moon in the first place.

One of the things that makes Mooncop so special is Gauld's ability to create a sense of wonder and awe about the Moon. Even though the lunar landscape is barren and unforgiving, Gauld manages to find beauty in it. He shows us the Moon's craters and mountains, its vast expanses of white dust, and its stunning sunsets.
But Mooncop is also a story about loneliness and isolation. Schätzing is a man who has left everything behind to live on the Moon. He has no family or friends, and his only companions are the other members of the base, who are all equally isolated. As a result, Schätzing often feels a sense of emptiness and longing.
However, Mooncop is not a depressing story. It is a story about hope and resilience. Schätzing may be lonely, but he is also a strong and resourceful man. He is proud of the work he does, and he is determined to make the best of his life on the Moon.
Mooncop is a beautifully drawn and thought-provoking graphic novel that explores the loneliness and beauty of space exploration. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
Author's Note
I was inspired to write Mooncop after reading about the real-life experiences of astronauts who have spent long periods of time in space. I was fascinated by the challenges that these astronauts faced, both physically and psychologically. I wanted to create a story that would explore these challenges and the human spirit that overcomes them.
I hope that Mooncop will inspire readers to think about the future of space exploration and the possibilities that lie ahead. I also hope that it will encourage readers to appreciate the beauty of the Moon and the other planets in our solar system.
