Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States. He served from 1933 to 1945, and is considered one of the most important figures in American history.
Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York, on January 30, 1882. He was the son of James Roosevelt, a wealthy businessman, and Sara Delano Roosevelt, a prominent socialite. Roosevelt attended Groton School and Harvard University, where he studied law. After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt worked as a lawyer in New York City.
In 1910, Roosevelt was elected to the New York State Senate. He served in the Senate for four years, and then was elected Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913. Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy until 1920, when he was nominated for Vice President on the Democratic ticket. Roosevelt and his running mate, James M. Cox, were defeated by Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge in the 1920 election.
In 1921, Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio. The disease paralyzed his legs, and he was unable to walk for the rest of his life. Roosevelt refused to let his disability define him, and he continued to be active in politics. In 1928, he was elected Governor of New York. He served as Governor for four years, and then was elected President of the United States in 1932.
Roosevelt took office in the midst of the Great Depression. The economy was in shambles, and millions of Americans were unemployed. Roosevelt quickly implemented a series of programs to help the country recover from the Depression. These programs, known as the New Deal, included the creation of the Social Security system, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The New Deal helped to improve the economy and reduce unemployment. However, the country was still struggling when World War II broke out in 1939. Roosevelt led the United States into the war, and he played a key role in the Allied victory. Roosevelt died in office on April 12, 1945.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a great leader who helped to change America for the better. He was a man of courage, determination, and compassion. He will always be remembered as one of the most important figures in American history.
