He began his career as a sailor and explorer in the Portuguese navy. In 1519, he set out from Spain with five ships to find a westward route to the Spice Islands. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. He reached the Philippines in 1521, where he was killed in a battle with the natives.

Magellan received a good education and was fluent in several languages. He began his career as a sailor and explorer in the Portuguese navy. He served in the Indian Ocean and the Far East. In 1513, he was part of an expedition that reached Malacca, Malaysia.

The First Circumnavigation of the Globe

In 1519, Magellan set out from Spain with five ships to find a westward route to the Spice Islands. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean and reached Brazil. He then sailed across the Pacific Ocean and reached the Philippines in 1521. He was the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean.

Magellan was killed in a battle with the natives in the Philippines. However, his expedition continued on and successfully circumnavigated the globe. The expedition returned to Spain in 1522 with only one ship and 18 survivors.
