In the annals of history, few figures embody the allure and danger of fascism as Diana Mitford, the enigmatic British aristocrat who became Hitler's Angel.
Born into a prominent family in 1910, Mitford was blessed with beauty, wit, and a rebellious spirit. She defied societal norms, embracing a bohemian lifestyle and experimenting with fashion and relationships.
However, behind her glamorous facade lay a deep and abiding fascination with fascism. In the 1930s, as Europe descended into political turmoil, Mitford became increasingly attracted to the ideas of Benito Mussolini and Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists.
In 1936, Mitford married Sir Oswald Mosley, cementing her status as a leading figure in the British fascist movement. She wholeheartedly embraced Mosley's anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and authoritarianism.
Mitford's high-profile support for fascism earned her the attention of Adolf Hitler himself. In 1939, she met the Führer at his Bavarian retreat, where he was smitten by her beauty and charm.
From that moment on, Mitford became known as Hitler's Angel, a symbol of the collaboration between the British fascist movement and Nazi Germany. She visited Germany several times, meeting with Nazi leaders and attending rallies.
With the outbreak of World War II, Mitford's pro-Nazi sympathies became a liability. She was interned in Holloway prison, where she remained for the duration of the war.
After the war, Mitford continued to defend her fascist beliefs. She returned to England and rebuilt her life, but her past as Hitler's Angel haunted her.
In the decades that followed, Mitford became a controversial figure. Some saw her as a victim of her time, while others condemned her for her unwavering support of fascism.
Diana Mitford died in 2003, leaving behind a complex and troubling legacy. Her life serves as a chilling reminder of the seductive power of fascism and the dangers of embracing its hateful ideology.
