Islay Walden was born in Scotland in 1898. From an early age, she felt a call to serve God and others. In 1921, she traveled to China as a missionary with the China Inland Mission. Walden spent the next 13 years in China, working with women and children in remote villages.

In 1934, Walden was forced to leave China due to the political unrest. She returned to Scotland and worked with the Church of Scotland for several years. In 1947, she moved to Canada with her husband, David.
